The split tool is a little bit special, since it creates a completely new polygon object with the content of the current polygon selection. It's therefore very useful if you want to split up one big mesh into several smaller ones.

Modes
The split tool can only be applied to raw polygon objects. It's only available in polygon mode.

  To use the split tool, select some polygons of a raw polygon object. Then call the menu command "ToolsPolygonSplit". A new polygon object will be created in the object browser which contains the former polygon selection. All tags and selections will also be copied to the new object.
